![]() ![]() Looked in my old computer and found this email from Remington. I did research on the subject a few times, I have yet to find anything on google even suggesting that people are dying because they tried to use steal shot in an old shotgun. I guess google isn't much of a friend after all. Hasn't steel shot been around a while? And no old shotguns have blown up because of steel shot yet, have they? If it's that dangerous, all old shotguns should be outlawed immediately before someone dies. So you are saying that he could die if the inside of the barrel gets scratched up? Gee, I wonder why the government isn't all over that one. This is like saying jump on thin ice till you fall thru. I'd say go ahead, they are tough old sun's of guns but just keep an eye out. ![]() Have put a couple practise shots through it & haven't noticed anything either. I picked up the 12 over the summer and will be using it as an all around shotgun this year as well. It does kick even for a 16 but as far as any damage. Hunted geese with #2 last year and noticed absolutely nothing. I have two Remington Wingmasters, A 16 gauge from 53 and a 12 gauge from 65. Best bet is pickup a new Barrel with chokes for steel shot. Have a 1980 Remington WingMaster and want to know if others are shooting steel shot through older shotguns. ![]() If it's a high end gun (expensive) I would not use steel shot in it either way. With shotguns that old I would advise that you have the choke opened up to modified and the forcing cone cut for plastic shells. Shotguns manufactured before 1960 absolutely will kick like a mule, because of this short forcing cone. I bought the Cooey new in 1978 and acquired the Cooey a couple of years ago but it was made some time around 1960.Įven if you don't damage the barrel, if the shotgun was built prior to 1970 there is a good chance it has a short forcing cone and therefor it will kick like a Missouri Mule. With my Cooey Model 84, no noticeable issues. With my Mossberg 500 it bulged the barrel a bit just behind the choke. ![]()
